Any Gamut D200 Mark 3 owners out there?

Post by leachimnosneb »

I bought a Gamut D200 Mark 3 SS power amp about 6 months ago and I am happy enough running it using Gamut's own brand balanced interconnects connected to a Resolution Audio Cantata (transport dac and streamer) which also functions as a pre amp. There is an insignificant hiss and hum from the speakers when the Gamut is turned on just by itself and which does not alter when using the Cantata during normal CD playback. However when you increase the volume to the max in order to by pass the preamp function the noise increases incrementally becoming intolerable at the bypass level.

This may be due to an incompatibility with the RAC and might be cured once I decide upon an appropriate linestage pre. However, I have used the RAC as a source only with Gerry D's Cary valve amp and there is no hiss or hum at any level.

Any ideas would be very welcome.Thanks.

Hi,
The Gamut amp has 2 sets of speaker connections, one is direct and the other has a resistor/coil circuit to protect the amp, according to the manual, you could try swapping these and see if that makes any difference.
There are also dip switches inside the top cover to allow you to increase/reduce gain so you might consider those.
However you say the hiss gets louder as you turn up the volume, does that suggest there's a problem incoming signal, can you connect another input device with volume control?

I have the GamuT amp and use a Tom Evans Vibe plus pre amp. I have never had a problem with hiss. When testing a valve phono pre amp for a hum I turned the volume up full at one stage and the system was virtually silent. The hum came from a different scource. If there is hissing I would look elsewhere for the problem first. It is very unlikely to be the GamuT.
