Does it play MVK from the USB or would I have to hook up an external HD?

You can play mkv files from usb, and from external hd, and if you want from your pc, very stable software, supports nearly all formats.

Thanks, it would be useful alright but I'm hesitant to make the cinema system more complex than it is. I'm not the only one using it!

I'm using my self in cinema system, but dune hd max, and really happy, cause never had any problem playing any movie or music file, if you change your mind let me know.
