After the Debussy talk yesterday, I realised I have far more of his piano music on on shelf than I realised: 4 readings of the preludes, 2 children's corner, estampes, images. I had no recollection of this. I decided I should look and see what else I have and by the time I got to B I discovered a box of Parrott conducting the Brandenburgs, orchestral suites and a few others. No recollection of that either. It's not even like I have that many CDs, and they're all on the shelf so hardly hidden. There are a few discs that I bought more than a decade ago still in the wrapper. Must try to listen to more stuff!

I would say that is more likely to be your problem Si especially in the last year or so. When one is constantly looking for something to listen to then one becomes more aware of what is there simply due to seeing it on the shelf.
Having said that not only have I forgotten that I have certain CDs on the shelf I have, more frequently than I care to admit, gone off and bought the same CD again!!

That doesn't really happen to me as I think, once, twice, thrice before buying a CD and now as I have so many box sets I do have to be very, very careful.

I was listening to Gloria this morning, very much enjoying a particular piece, and when it was announced as The Tallis Scholars singing Lamentations by Brumel I thought hmmm. Sure enough it's on the shelf...

What a co-incidence that this thread should pop up!

I came within a whisker of buying this CD inadvertently for the 2nd time last night ;-)



I also remember leaving HMV on Oxford Street being very proud of this purchase:-



...then suddenly realising after I exited the shop and proceeded down to Bond Street that I had bought it online a few months past.

My cataloguing system has been shot to buggery for about 2 years now - so there's no hope for me....

I don't suffer from this problem to the same extent, partly because my collection is small, and partly because my inner-control freak has catalogued everything to within an inch of it's life... if you ask me what I have, I could find it for you within 10 seconds.

My problem starts when I'm in a charity shop, puzzling over a different cover/ orchestra/ recording etc to the one I own.. or is it the same one, after all??

well, if you will go storing them all under your towels, spare bedding and dirty socks.. ;-)

Although I truly am envious that you have the discipline to catalogue extensively Jared, I saw an interesting video on YouTube that has made me smile.

What it is, is Rob Cowan of Radio 3 posing for a 'get to know the R3 presenters' piece. We see Rob at home, in his music shed at the bottom of the garden. The shed looks an utter mess; packing crates full of CDs piled up. Using the 'Cowan Chaos Theory' of listening selection, Rob haphazardly pokes through his disordered collection and finds CDs that he didn't know he had. A man after my own heart....
