At PCWorld I saw several Antivirus/protection software packages. What would you suggest I use? A single computer running Windows XP....
Thanks

Tom, I use AVG Free for 4 different PC's without any problem.

You need to remove McAfee/ Norton or whatever first and then download and install AVG.
See ya Sunday.

I get by with AVG free.
But I hear great things about Microsoft Security Essentials
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/wind ... essentials
However if you want to spend money go for Kaspersky, IIRC it'srun by a few Russian guys who learned the trade from the other side of the fence.
Norton will probably degrade your performance more than the virus it's supposed to prevent.

I use McAfee but still I got a virus [called System Repair] ...
Here is a review site for free software
http://www.techsupportalert.com/
and here is the section dealing with anti-virus

By the way -- if you want anti-virus software PC-World often has sales ; otherwise try Amazon
[It is almost always cheaper to buy a new copy of the software than to upgrade an existing copy] ..

Avast and avg work excellently here over several years. I've had to uninstall Norton loads of times on machines it was such a memory hog.

I use Microsoft security essentials, it's free and has worked for nearly 2 years now hassle free.
I had Zonealarm but that was becoming a huge system hog.
It's so much in microsofts interest that their antivirus works it's seems reasonable to presume it will be by far the best of the "free" options

Thanks lads for all the advice and offers. I installed the AVG Free as suggested by Ken Moreland, after uninstalling McAfee and it scanned my system - no problems found. I think my computer is responding a bit faster too. Great to know that so much good advice is to be got for the asking. Thanks again and well done.

An interesting problem has popped up! When I load MS Outlook an information box/alert advises me that the McAfee Add on for Outlook is missing. I can press the OK button to proceed.
Anyone got any ideas where this Add on is located and how to disable the reference to it. It is not a serious problem but if it can be cleared easily, then I will do so.
Thanks.
