^^ I know, my friend..
I have recently been re-evaluating the quality/ suitability of some of the very early purchases I made, and have been changing them for versions which would now prove to be more my taste...
In this instance, the Karajan version (rather lethargic and muddy) was sold on ebay, in favour of a leaner, stripped down version from a high quality interpreter. I'm probably in the middle of changing over aboput 15 CDs in this way, because I simply can't keep everything.

I had a CD storage unit built and mounted on the wall of my music room in January 2009, when complete my lovely wife exclaimed, "that'll do you for life', short life then as it's nearly full. I am not inclined to get rid of recordings now; when I started my mad Mahler binge a few years ago I did return several recordings because I thought them horrid, I am very careful now about what I buy, at least I try to be.

^^ Sean, there is absolutely no doubt that the more exprienced in CM listening I have become, the more discerning over my choice of purchases I have become. As a consequence, it's quite unlikely that I will get rid of anything I have bought more recently, (unless it was an experiment from a charity shop).
When you start off collecting, if you have no-one to guide you, you simply think ah... DG/ EMI/ Karajan/ Mutter/ Bernstein... they're big names, they must be the best... when in reality in some repertoire, we know they aren't. Also, even within the last 4 plus years, my tastes have changed a little, so I am just doing some fine tuning, to provide myself with a collection which will hopefully be with me for life... it is my intention for instance, that the above posted German Requiem will reside on my shelves into old age, next to the Gardiner...
