Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique played by the Philharmonia Orchestra/Cluytens....


I really enjoyed this version.

Oh, I'm tempted, sorely tempted to get it. Symphonie Fantastique is one of my favourite symphones of all time.

I recommend it and it comes at a good price too!
Incidentally, there is a full movement from Berlioz's Romeo and Juliet also on the disc played by Chicago SO/Giulini. This is a work that I do not know but I am sorely tempted after listening!

Tonight, in an effort to whet my appetite for tomorrow's R3 CD Review I decided to revisit my Stravinsky box set.

Dowland – Consort Music and Songs....




There is great playing on this disc, especially the lutenist....the engineers got the balance spot on; a great recording.

I opened this box set today and played disc no.1 to get a flavour of the performances....




The music is played on modern instruments (with a harpsichord continuo) but the touch is light and the textures are crisp and clear and there is plenty of weight in the body of the music. The music is recorded in a warm acoustic. Speeds are brisk but not too fast and there is a lovely lyrical flow to the music making. So far, so very pleasant!
