Jose Echenique wrote: Mozart composed this oratorio when he was 14 for the city of Padua, it´s very beautiful although there have been too few recordings. The best known, made in the mid 70´s for Philips was conducted by Vittorio Negri and was superbly sung by the great Swedish contralto Birgit Finnilä and Norwegian soprano Kari Lovaas.

Quite a lot of the Vivaldi Sacred Music in my collection is directed by Vittorio Negri and it is among the best that I have even with the current crop of Italians on the scene. I must watch out for that Mozart.

It is very interesting to hear the evolution from the Baroque to the Classical styles in this music....

Yes, I have Fergus, thanks. Of course, there isn't the natural 'flow' as with the Bach cantatas as you suggest, but I think pre-Bach has to be judged on it's own merits, and there is certainly a great deal of beauty here... and these disks are wonderfully performed; Emma Kirkby is in her element in this particular repertoire.

Revisiting this marvelous disc. Wonderful playing, but you have to single out master trumpet player Crispian Steele-Perkins who just refuses to play "improved" trumpets, here you get the real thing, even when the tuning is sometimes unequal...it always was in the XVIII Century.
The music is very fine, really, worth hearing.

I've long had rather a soft spot for those Piano Trios... absolute chamber gems..

meanwhile, Palestrina by the Tallis Scholars hardly needs any recommendations from me!
