I really like both Jared but to be very honest I am quite biased in every way towards Gardiner as you know so I may not be a fair judge in this situation. Both use smaller forces than is usual for these symphonic works but to me the Gardiners are more polished and have more drive [given my comment!!!]. The honest truth is I genuinely would not be without either version. Not very helpful to you I know....but there it is.

I am certainly tempted to get the Mackerras set.
