Overall, Claudio Abbado is also the greatest conductor of Russian music alive, yes, greater even than Gergiev.
His Stravinsky with the LSO is just marvelous, his Tchaikovsky too, but most especially his Mussorgsky.
He first conducted Boris Godunov in the 70´s at La Scala, with the great Bulgarian basso Nicolai Ghiaurov in the title role. Then in the 90´s he did it concert form with the Berlin Philharmonic. The resulting recording is both incredibly beautiful and incredibly moving. He was lucky to have the great bass-baritone Anatoly Kotcherga in the title role, a magnificent singer I was lucky to see in this opera some years ago.
This is another priceless treasure we have to thank him for.
