I don't have a copy of it either so I am going to buy a copy of the Fritz Reiner performance with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO), to my ear Reiner can do no wrong, his recordings with the CSO are superb.

Any other suggestions? Darren?

Claus, BBC Radio 3's Building a Library on Saturday morning @ 9.30 will explore Nielsen's Fourth Symphony and make a recommendation: a programme not to be missed. Blomstedt/SFSO anyone?

Kempe/ Tortelier

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Strauss-Quixote ... 577&sr=1-1

although the recording quality might (as per the review) be a little below par...

[note: sorry I've not been posting much guys... very busy at work this week]

Well that's me out!!

Anyone have any other suggestions where the recording quality is *above* par? ;-)

Richard Strauss and von Karajan conducting are a match made in Heaven to these tired old ears!!!

Incidentally, I like the Kempe....so where does that leave my recommendations????

I think my baseline recommendation for Don Quixote will be:-

I think it is available reasonably cheaply and, as Sean suggests, the participants are first rate :-)

I am getting in training for 'The Rite of Spring' and have just bought ..

[Probably should not have told you .. you will now where I am getting all my information from :) ].

But .. seriously ..

I am only intersted in understanding how the music works becuse I really love listenning to it .. otherwise it would just be an academic exercise.

I already have a book by Peter Hill about Messiaen so I have great hopes for this one.

Le Sacre is not to everyone's taste, I LOVE it. After all the Saced Music that is spoken of on this forum it will be good to have a month devoted to a pagan ritual.
