Came home tired last night after teaching an evening lecture, but my brain needed further demands put on it! I listened to two old favourites:

How does the Végh compare to the Takacs quartet Ciaran?
Actually the pic on the cover above is the outdoor Szechenyi hot spring baths in Budapest. Well worth a visit if you ever get the chance. In winter time the surrounding pool area could be covered in feet of snow but the water in the pool remains quite warm.

I wondered what that picture was! My set actually has quite a different cover.

I don't have the Takács's Bartók (or Beethoven, but I have some of their Schubert on order), so I can't compare. I must get it: it's been on my wishlist for years! However I do really like the Végh in Bartók and Beethoven. I have the Tokyo Quartet and the Fine Arts Quartet on LP and while they're very good, I feel the Végh are even better. There is also a mono recording of the Végh Quartet playing the Bartók quartets which was made in the 50s and is supposed to be very good.

I dont have the complete set Fergus, just the M2 & M3. The M3 is gone missing though.
