Bernstein had a way with Haydn and in his day was considered one of the premiere Haydn interpreters. These are full orchestra Haydn, not over blown by any means, but always elegant. He mines all the subtle humor in the music and also the energy and drama when called upon. Well recorded from the early 60's through the 70's. I turn to them time and again. He also recorded the 12 "London Symphonies", the major Masses and "Die Schopfung".

Thank you for that Don; I must watch out for Bernstein in Haydn so!

Fergus, they have been available in some inexpensive box sets from Sony now and then. Worth checking out.

In all the moving and shifting about I have relocated my small vinyl collection :)

That is interesting Darren; I did not realize that you had a vinyl collection.

I have always liked the concept of a conductor conducting his own work as it gives valuable insights into the music.

Stravinsky was also a fine conductor as well. Hindemith's recordings conducting his own music are also some interesting revelations.

I have some Hindemith on the playlist for this weekend Don. I am not too familiar with his music so I am not too sure that I will learn a lot during the session.
