I have a 2 or 3 disc Tallis collection of works by Tallis and the variety of style is amazing, changing with the church's laws about music and the changing belief in England. Still, I'm not sure I really 'get' the 40-part motet.

Tallis did write some beautiful music all right. If a mere organ-playing mortal like yourself has problems with Spem in Alium then what chance have we poor souls got?!?! Perhaps Jared will enlighten us after his first listen!!

I'm already familiar with the work (Summerly/ Oxford Camerata/ Naxos) and find it to produce a majestic, all embracing wall of sound, with possibly the most intricate example of Polyphony of its age... certainly in this country. I can't explain in more detailed terms why I like it (and indeed the equally incredible Salve intermerata) but I find it quite a spiritual experience...

Good for you Jared! Good description of the effect of the work! I too have and enjoy that Summerly version.
