Hi Mark, I love Prokofiev's ballet and have the recordings by the LSO conducted by Previn and it is marvellous, what do you make of Jarvi's recording with the Cincinnati SO?

Hi Seán,
I really like the piece too. I think that it's an essential in any collection and has clearly been a huge influence on many modern film soundtrack scores.
In my library, I have the LSO/Gergiev and the Montreal Symphony/Dutoit versions and have just been listening to Jarvi recording today via Qobuz streaming.
My initial impression is of greater detail, dynamics and string emphasis in the Jarvi while the Dutoit seems more brass heavy and a little muffled but still very musical. It's been a while since I listened to the Gergiev but I seem to remember a more live feel with big Russian dynamics and I appreciate the complete score, not just the suites and highlights of the other recordings. I'll get round to the Gergiev again this weekend hopefully and I see that Qobuz have the Previn, so I'll give it a try too.
Mark.

I've been to the sum total of 4 classical concerts, Angela Hewitt in the Art Gallery being 2 of them.
I'm busy ripping my collection at the moment and have come to box sets.Long time since I listened to this. Very Good to my ears.

Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique
I've tried many times to like this recording but I detest it so it'll be the last time it gets played here. Something about the way the performance was captured due to whatever mic positioning they used. Sounds like they played at the bottom of a well.
switched over to the following after the first movement to start again.....
played and performed pretty much in the same spirit as Gardiner above but a much better recording which is important for me.

Agreed - she is very good with Bach's music.

Interesting comment Dave; I have not listened to it in a long time myself but I must dig it out again in the light of your comments.

I have been quiet here lately because I have been making my way through a new box set purchase that I have made recently....
I am now on disc 26 of 32 and I have to say that I have enjoyed every moment of it. I have been planning this purchase for quite some time now and I am very pleased that I eventually forced myself to do so. Recommended to all Haydn fans.
