Interesting, Simon; suspicions confirmed?!!?
So far, yes.
As a consequence I ordered a Margaret Phillips 2-CD on Friday. What I've heard online sounds VERY promising.

Hilary Hahn Swedish Radio SO Salonen Conducting
Schoenberg and Sibelius Violin Concerti
DG 001085802
Hahn makes a convincing case in the Schoenberg and is wonderful in the Sibelius.

I've been enjoying that record:
and in fact I've been coming around to Schoenberg somewhat in the last year or two. I used not to be able to get beyond
Verklärte Nacht, which I've always loved.
Welcome to the forum, Don: I used to post on another forum as lismahago, but I haven't been there in a long time!

I recognize the name, glad Seán told me about this forum.
Anyway, it has often been said about Schoenberg that he released melody from its chains, making music more linear than horizontal. I think Hahn understands this and brings out the melodic lines of the work. Her performance is much more lyrical than the harder edged Zvi Zeitlin/Kubelik/BRSO recording that has been around for ages. Schoenberg was an excellent, colorful orchestrator as well, something that has been overlooked.

Antonio Vivaldi
Four Seasons
Midori Seiler - violin
Akademie fur Alte Musik Berlin
Clemens- Maria Nuszbaumer - directing.
A very enjoyable performance and Akademie fur Alte Musik Berlin are a superb ensemble. However, I still prefer the Fabio Biondi & Europa Galante recordings to any other in my collection.
Georg PhilippTelemann
Violin Concerto 'The Frogs'
Midori Seiler - violin
Akademie fur Alte Musik Berlin
Stephan Mai directing.
This is my first recording of Telemann's concerto, it is marvellous and is aided and abetted by a superb performance by the Berliners.

You have inspired me to break out Lupu's wonderful Schubert Bb Sonata D 960.. outside of Fleisher, the best I know...
