This is interesting. Manuscripts of this composition have appeared in 2 Austrian abbeys since the 1930´s. Recently it´s been attributed to Pergolesi on account of some similarities to his oratorio La Morte di San Giuseppe. Well, I have that oratorio on an old Ricordi recording and I can´t hear the similarities ANYWHERE. More startling, this -to me- doesn´t sound like anything I have ever heard from Pergolesi.
If I had been asked blindfolded, I would have said that this indeed sounds like Central European, something wrote around 1700 in the style of the Imperial Vienna Court: Fux/Caldara/Conti, but Pergolesi? Sorry, but not.
The work itself is very beautiful, it consists on 7 mini cantatas with 2 arias and a recitative each. It´s very contemplative and it perhaps can be related to Graupner´s The Last 7 Words.
I could grant that it was composed by someone who may have known La Morte di San Giuseppe, but not by Pergolesi himself. The structure is like anything he ever did.
Still, most important of all, it´s a truly beautiful work, and obviously René Jacobs lavishes every care on it. A beautiful recording.

Yes indeed, Fergus, they're very much central in the organ repertoire and pop up on recital programmes quite a lot. The only one I play in full myself is number 4, along with a couple of other movements here and there. There's some great music in here, but I don't have a recording recommendation for you. Must look on the shelf and see what I have.

Cheers Simon; I agree that it is lovely music and I would at least like to have a complete set!

Jared, I think that box is worth it for those performances alone. I love them.

Dipping into that Bach organ works set played by Simon Preston. Initial impressions wouldn't be hugely positive!!

yes, I'd agree... they really are top notch. I'll be spending quite a large part of the Spring, exploring this set and the Dvorak String Quartet set I recently purchased, which is why I haven't been posting many album covers, recently...
