^^ somehow, that doesn't surprise me!
of course, that one has been out of print for some time now, and the cost is sadly prohibitive... I found it surprisdingly enjoyable, and certainly VERY English!!

Both are very good. The Kraemer has the better orchestra and the McGegan the better singers, but both are enjoyable. Even though Rule Britannia! is no longer politically correct, I like it very much.Jared wrote:^^ somehow, that doesn't surprise me!

I used to watch an English detective TV show when I was a child (can´t remember the name, but it was shown in the late 60´s), and they used to play the tune of Rule Britannia, so it always brings back memories...of England and my long gone youth :-)

I have a simple question for all of our Handel enthusiasts....
now, I love the Messiah, but how many recordings are there out there???
well, I'm on my 1st and 2nd listen of this disk at present:
and how many recordings of these works have been made? hardly any. I find that very surprising, given the magnificent quality of the harmonies herein; it's just as well that at least we have this real beauty to treasure.... what a gem this is!!

How big is your shelf LOL!!!
I only have five different versions namely those conducted by Beecham, Christie, Hogwood, McCreesh and Pinnock. I enjoy them all as they each bring something of their own to the performances. A lot depends on how you like your soloists in this work. As you seem to be impressed with the CD above you might like to hear the Hogwood version as he conducts the Academy of Ancient Misic and Emma Kirkby is one of the soloists.
I am sure that Pepe will have something to say on this matter Jared!

some repertoire by composers becomes very well known and frequently recorded, like the Messiah, but I bet some of the Chandos Anthems have scarcely seen the light of day on CD... when they are so beautiful, which seems a great shame, and is why the CD above is such a gem.
