I like Ashkenazy's Sibelius; it is a little bit different to other's.

A super symphony, great sound too I would imagine, I am not familiar with that recording.

^^ yes, me more than Fergus though, these days. Having said that, I've just been listening to his 'Frescoes of Piero Della Francesca' again with Belohlavek and the BBC Symph, and I have to say I found it much more accessible than anything I have thus far heard from the composer... it'll get another listen.

In the meantime, I'm listening to:

Smetana: Vltava
Vilem Tausky/ BBC Symph (Live)

in honour of Sean's thread. It's not a bad version actually... plenty of gusto as expected, but the tempos are considerably more stately, coming in at around 14.30, whereas Kubelik's is 11.35!

OK, now I've moved on to:

Smetana: Vysehrad/ From Bohemia's Woods & Fields/ Vltava
Roger Norrington/ National Youth Orchestra

Good man, enjoy. It was a labour of love.

I've given this a lot of time and have decided I very much like it... the fingerboard noises recede after a while... it's a very different set to Rostropovich... but very good...

it'll have to go on the vinyl shopping list..!!
