Cracking live Beethoven 9th from 1957, the Philharmonia with Klemperer conducting. Surprisingly good stereo sound.
The new counter-tenor on the block singing Hasse: my can he go high!
And some fun with Gergiev conducting the Kirov Orchestra in
The Nutcracker

I bought that one many years ago Ciaran and it great sounding CD. It is still the only version that I have!

I have others but that would be the top choice!

Ciaran wrote:Answering my own question, the extra viola is Karel Rehak, same as the Calliope
so it's probably the same: their current generation line-up with Jan Talich junior playing first violin. Really excellent, perhaps even better than the Grumiaux Trio plus two on Philips.
I have most of the Talich Quartet's recordings and they are highly recommendable, but probably quite hard to get now. I was very pleased to see in
Gramophone that they have a new recording of the Debussy and Ravel out on Dolce Vita
Following up: I see on Amazon.com that the Dolce Vita label has also rereleased the Talich Quartet's complete Mozart
and Beethoven:
I also see a Schönberg/Dvorák disk on Phaia:
I must look at getting that!

Those three masses are indeed beautiful Simon. I am delighted that you liked them!

Mendelssohn 4/Bernstein:
The outer movements of this work are filled with bombastic music (the opening movement is one of my favourites) and Bernstein, as one would imagine, really drives the music in a great performance.

I'm currently listening to a CD of flute and organ music that was recorded a couple of weeks ago (it's not a commercial release!) and I turned pages and what have you during the session. It's very instructive to hear a recording of something you were at and whose live sound you know intimately. Ultimately, hifi still has a long way to go!

continuing in the vein of Harmonia Mundi, and Egarr....
there's a wonderful bite to the violin in this recording without ever being too bright...
Jesus I can't wait for a new DAC.... :-(
