What are you listening two?

Tamerlano has been recorded before, but none of the previous recordings are as good as this one. Countertenors Xavier Sabata and Max Emanuel Cencic are outstanding, and it´s always a pleasure...and almost a necessity.... to have soprano Karina Gauvin in a Handel recording. It´s good to see John Mark Ainsley back in the studios, his role is of tremendous importance in this opera. Il Pomo d´Oro plays like gods.

L´ Archibudelli was founded by master cellist Anner Bylsma and his violinist wife Vera Beths. These are extraordinary musicians and all their recordings are superb, so both boxes are self recommending. I promise you won´t be disappointed.

I agree with Pepe there Seán; L´Archibudelli never disappoint. Those two box sets look like good choices; looking forward to reading your thoughts on them eventually.

Yesterday I listened to two versions of Beethoven's wonderful Missa Solemnis.

First up was von Karajan....





....a powerful and bombastic version; he gives it everything!


Senond up was the amazing Klemperer version....





....a much more understated version but equally powerful in a different way; very much more devotional.

The two versions are very much contrasting versions of a wonderful work.

Not to worry Seán, you are in for a treat. They are highly regarded period performance ensemble in the chamber music genre obviously. Once heard, always admired!

I was so sad when La Risonanza finished the Handel cantatas, now let's hope they continue with the Alessandro Scarlatti cantatas, there are some 600 of them.

The Klemperer was for many decades the prime recommendation for Missa Solemnis, it's still a huge, granitic, awe inspiring interpretation, but now the choirs are much better, in fact, there is no comparison. That' why the Gardiner or the Herreweghe lead the field.
