that is indeed a real gem of an item Fergus... I have it on CD, after a strong recommendation from Lance on CMG... it always stuck me as being an exceptionally fine performance although peculiarly, it never features at the top of anyone's list, on the occasions when I've seen versions compared with each other...
Re: Recent Purchases
as you will expect Fergus, I also own that disk as part of my BBC series, however it is one which hasn't reached the CD player yet. Of course its one I'm looking forward to, because I love Janet Baker... what do you think of the performance?fergus wrote:

I am somewhat underwhelmed by the performance of the First Concerto, perhaps it will grow on me as for your recommendation: I love Gilels playing so I will certainly check it out, thank you. and now back to Schubert.Jared wrote:quite right, too... it's about time I started to exert a bit of influence around here... :-))Seán wrote:I'm acting under Jared's influence now as I'm on a Brahm's odyssey:

I have that set in my Amazon basket because I love to listen to Grumiaux, he was a wonderful musician.Jared wrote:you can't go wrong with that set Fergus... it's amongst the finest there is.. :-))fergus wrote:

Re: Recent Purchases
they are beautifully played, Sean... it's just a shame that Mozart's VCs are all fairly slight, in comparison to some of his more mature output... what we would give to have heard a VC No 6, written 5 years later...Seán wrote:I have that set in my Amazon basket because I love to listen to Grumiaux, he was a wonderful musician.Jared wrote:you can't go wrong with that set Fergus... it's amongst the finest there is.. :-))fergus wrote:

His PCs aren't as easy to appreciate immediately as his VC is... it's just a question of time. The Gilels set also contains the Fantasias, also beautifully played... the other set I own is the Cliff Curzon reissue on Decca, which is also top notch...Seán wrote:I am somewhat underwhelmed by the performance of the First Concerto, perhaps it will grow on me as for your recommendation: I love Gilels playing so I will certainly check it out, thank you. and now back to Schubert.
