perhaps my ire was rash.....
I just pulled out
Robert King's, Erbarme Dich from St Matthew Passion
now that was lovely.....
maybe it is the version and not the music?

Well, as you know it has happened to me on a few occasions, however as you will remember Fergus, it was the Monteverdi Madrigals (Bk VIII) which went back on the shelf for a whole 3 years, and somehow, they mysteriously improved with age!!
Incidentally, I've been out all day (just been listening to Handel's Julius Caesar in the car on the way home, on R3) and have read the interesting comments in this thread... thanks to all....
