Fergus, I think that you are doing a "Willie O'Dea" on it, Dave never said that. LOL
Simple, uncomplicated and beautiful music that is always a joy to listen to.
I will post my impressions on these recordings when I have spent more time listening to them but so far I am very pleased with what I have listened to. Haydn never really got it wrong did he?

Very good spot Seán....my exceuse is that I am suffering badly with a heavy cold and my eyes are streaming so I can bearly see the monitor let alone edit all of the correct brackets.

However, unlike the bold Willie, I publicly offer my sincerest apologies to Dave for any hurt caused and if he wants to consult the Greens with regard to my resignation then so be it!!!!

In relation to Haydn ever getting it wrong Seán....no....as you are finding out....enjoy!

lol Fergus. I never even noticed that you mistakenly quoted me instead of Sean. However you should have known that I already have several recordings of Haydn's String Quartets. I'll let you off this time! ;-)))

excellent purchase, Dave... this really is music making of the very highest order. I don't know whether you've seen it, but he his bringing out another 2 disk set of slightly earlier symphonies, on 15th March... it'll certainly be on my shopping list!

I am not sure whether or not you have the set Dave but Mackerras did a wonderful job on the Beethoven symphonies.

Funny you should ask Fergus, I'm currently trying to decide whether to go for the Gardiner or the Mackerras set. Does anyone have both?

I already have the Hogwood set which would be one of the 'smaller forces' boxsets. Just wondering if the Gardiner or Mackerras would offer something somewhat different from Hogwood. I've been considering the Bruggen one too.
