There is some really excellent, beautiful and charming chamber music contained in this set. The playing is wonderful and the range of instruments used is extensive which all lends for a very intimate and entertaining four CDs worth of music.

Landscape V (for Sho and String Orchestra)
Ceremonial Dance for String Orchestra
Sakura for Otto Tomek (Sho)
Cloud and Light (for Sho and Orchestra)

The Sho is a Japanese equivalent of the mouth organ but with a very gentle, evanescent kind of sound. I saw the performer, Miyumi Miyata, performing Cloud and Light on a TV broadcast a couple of years ago so I finally succumbed and bought the CD. The music doesn't sound in the least Japanese. It's modern but the slow tempo, the weaving of the lines, makes it easy to relax and listen to.

Brahms second Piano Concerto is a very lyrical work and its mood is buoyant and positive, triumphal even. These qualities therefore need to be brought out for a successful performance of this work and they certainly are in this live performance. Guy’s pianism is of the highest order and he also brings a lovely lyricism to the work. The London Philharmonic Orchestra under Berglund plays very well and very sympathetically thereby setting the necessary background and atmosphere for Guy to operate within. The balance between soloist and orchestra is just right in the appropriate places. Special mention must be given to the solo horn player whose tone and presence are both wonderful. In summary this is a very good interpretation of a beautiful work.
