Did a re-edit of 9.12 and re-installed it and 4.25. Switched off jplay services running in the background but the music played only for a time . The time didn't seem consistent varying from 1 min to 10 secs.

Hmm, I can and do play complete albums.
I just double checked and I
am using 9.12 and 4.25 too.

Services needed for MQN?
I have Windows AUDIO and Windows AUDIO ENDPOINT BUILDER set to Automatic. Are both of these needed?
My SERVER install does not have Multimedia Class Scheduler listed at all? Could this be why I am not able to get mqnplay to run more than one or two seconds if at all?
What services are required? What services, that concern audio/media need to be turned off?
Thanks in advance!

I didn't do anything with services on my Server 2012R2 install.
I just run the default setup and at some point apply AudioPhil's AudioOptimiser.
But MQn runs both before and after applying AO.

A normal R2 has windows audio service switched of after installation. If you switch this service on
everything should work fine as Aleg mentioned. Please be aware, as soon as you have installed AO the R2 installation is changed and the behaviour changes due to the changes of AO, even before you have started the servicetool or the optimizertool.
If I am not wrong, Phil explains the audio service in the manual as well.
Take care

UPDATE
Trying 9.12 and 4.25 yesterday I used some short tracks and it stopped early but I see Aleg is able to play full albums so I tried this today and the album played almost to the end of the last track. Played yesterday's short track and it stopped in 20s but now playing second album without stopping so far , so it seems to be dependent on the amount of music to be played.
Sound is first class too.

UPDATE UPDATED
Played second album and it played perfectly until around 2 to 3 mins remaining and then stopped so the pattern is clear, it's running fine but stopping 2mins early meaning a single track stops after 20s to 1min.
Sound is great though.

Each musical instrument family — strings, winds, brass and percussion — has at least one member which produces energy to 40 kHz or above. Some of the spectra reach this work's measurement limit of 102.4 kHz.
Harmonics of French horn can extend to above 90 kHz; trumpet, to above 80; violin and oboe, to above 40; and a cymbal crash shows no sign of running out of energy at 100 kHz.

ok, thanks for trying it, shall proceed with the new method and get it all fixed. It should also give me a rudimentary way of stopping/pausing/moving tracks.

sbgk,
When you add convenience to MQN please consider adding a polarity switch.
I know I have asked this numerous times but only because it is important. It can be done so much easier in the digital domain. If you are not using a polarity switch SOMEWHERE you are not aware of what you are missing. Once you hear the difference you will find it mandatory. All this said with the assumption that I, one of these days, will again be enjoying MQn!
AND while I am at it - is MMCSS needed for MQn to work? I do not see it in my list of services and wonder if that is why I am having trouble. I likely removed whatever makes it work. I know it must have been needed at one time from early posts but is that an artifact of the WASAPI era?
PLEASE let me know.
Thanks and take care,
