2 manuscripts survive of Poppea, neither in Monteverdi´s handwriting. The better known, and most often recorded is the Venetian one, but Jacobs uses the one from Naples, and there are differences between the 2, so it´s good to have the other alternative in this recording. Can´t recall if there´s any other recording of the Naples, but I think not.

Very well conducted and obviously the star is Joyce DiDonato, but overall I prefer Myung Whun-Chung´s version on DG, very well conducted too, and has a far more stylish and commanding soprano in Luba Orgonasova.

Oh Lord, Freni and Carreras were 3 (vocal) sizes too small for their roles.

After listening to JEG's Magnificat I returned to Herreweghe:

Johann Sebastian Bach
Liebster Gott, wenn werd' ich sterben BWV 8
Mit Fried und Freud ich fahr dahin, BWV 125
Warum betrübst du dich, mein Herz BWV 138
Collegium Vocale Gent
Philippe Herreweghe conducting.

Wonderful!
