I have never heard about Brescianello!! (so much to learn about the music from the Baroque period!!!). Thanks for showcasing it Fergus. What does it compare to in the realm of more "known" works?
Peter
Collecting music from the Baroque period is a very slippery slope Peter!! There are so many twists and turns and such a vast array of composers many of whom are only beginning to be explored in modern times.
The music on the above Brescianello 2xCD set could probably be best described as a cross between Corelli and Vivaldi if that makes any sense to you. The musical language is very straightforward and is based an lovely melodies. The form is somewhere between a concerto grosso and a Vivaldi concerto and the content is very charming.

A change of mood for me with the sombre tones of Biber's Requiem and Kerll's Missa Pro Defunctis....

I really like that set, to my mind they are preferable to the Ormandy/PO recordings.

More obscure Baroque music, this time from Fedele Fenaroli. The Stabat Mater and Inno “Pange Lingua” are particularly gorgeous pieces of music and are beautifully sung....

Wonderful music, especially the Double Concerto for Harpsichord, Fortepiano and Orchestra.

Franz Joseph Haydn
Symphony 6, 7, 8, 30, 31, 45, 53, 59, 60, 69 & 73
Concentus musicus Wien
Nikolaus Harnoncourt conducting.
I have been on a Haydn binge over the past few days and am really enjoying this wonderful set by Harnoncourt and his Austrian orchestra, repeated listening enhances the pleasure. Haydn's Symphonies are marvellous and when one considers that he wrote 104 of them it is amazing that the standard is so high throughout.
Franz Joseph Haydn
Symphony 73, 74 & 75
The Hanover Band
Roy Goodman conducting.
Fergus introduced me to Goodman in 2010, they are splendid performances, alas it is the only Goodman recording in my collection, by right I should have all of them.
