Using JRiver it's easy to switch between KS and Wasapi and playing the same DSD track back-to-back the contrast between KS and Wasapi is the same as described by Nigel in his diagram. Wasapi sounds lighter/sharper/detailed , KS sounds deeper/smoother/musical. Perhaps something intrinsic in the two mechanisms and down to taste.

I'm sure MS spent a lot of time tuning wasapi to get that sound.

Maybe someone interested... Today on
giveawayoftheday.com Process Lasso Pro is for free. I use it for core affinity, IO/Ram priority and such (like tasker but more powerful). Very useful for audio players.

am making little steps towards reducing the ks code, already sounds much better, specific to my device at the moment though, but it sounds very live and dynamic.
my device name is "\\?\usb#vid_16d0&pid_071a#413-001#{65e8773e-8f56-11d0-a3b9-00a0c9223196}\wave"
have uploaded ksstudio.exe, ksmon.sys and uvcview.exe which can be used to explore your device
copy them into a folder, eg kstools, run ksstudio as administrator, click ok on filter options and ignore error message
you can add a wave file source from the test filter factory and add your device from render factory, add by right mouse click and instantiating, then join the output pin from the wave to the device filter by dragging your mouse between them and you should be able to play.
uvcview tells you everything you would want about usb devices.
these are MS tools from the win 7 winDDK

PC: Win 8.1 x64 pro, cpu Q8400, 8GB Ram, Dac HRT Music Streamer II+, Asus Xonar Essence ST (the same since very first MQn versions) + head set/amplifier (I'm headphone guy).
Last working version was 8.16 and 7.44 earlier.
my KS Studio "log", hope this helps (working fine BTW):
