DIY Quad Stands - moved from classifieds
Re: DIY Quad Stands - moved from classifieds
Jeebus, I need to move to a bigger house! or knock through the walls to give the esls a bit of air at the back....
The whole place is a complete mess. Can't find anything. Right now I'm eating scrambled eggs, with a comb, from a shoe!
Re: DIY Quad Stands - moved from classifieds
Great stuff Barry - thats the one alright.
I use it in particular for the distance between the quads, the angle and the distance to the chair. Its a little , err, compressed when it comes to back and side walls.....

Do or do not, there is no try

Bumping this.
How serious is the difference between ESL on stands and ESL on stubby feet? Are we at the level where you simply might as well not bother on the stubby stands, or is it a marginal thing?
Also, thanks for the layout scan. If I go ahead and buy Dowser's 57s, I'll be conjugating the verb "to shoehorn" all evening. I'll be doing well to get 4 feet between them, and that's with them virtually tight to the side walls. The only thing is there'll be loads of space behind them. Totally intrigued to hear them at home now.

That perfect. You don't need space to the sides - I have mine at either wall even though I don't have to. I just like wide. (ahem) Space behind is good but you might want, at some stage, to break up the rear waves a bit. Re: DIY Quad Stands - moved from classifieds
The Kharmas behind them should do a reasonable job of breaking things up (expensive sound treatments, those), and I've absorption towards the rear walls anyway. Really looking forward to hearing them in the man cave.

Re: DIY Quad Stands - moved from classifieds
They're dipoles, so essentially zero energy to the sides, so you you should (theoretically) be able to put them as close as you like to the sidewalls.Ivor wrote:That perfect. Congratulations on the new arrival!
Re: DIY Quad Stands - moved from classifieds
Congrats Simon. Will be very curious how they will compare to the Kharmas. I too gave these ESLs some serious thought but I let them go in the end. I did consider one time the newer Quad 2905's even if they dont quite have the same midrange magic that the 57/63's do allegedly. But they have other things going for them from what I've read.

Re: DIY Quad Stands - moved from classifieds
I had a quick listen in Dowser's place at lunchtime, and initial impressions are that they definitely won't replace the Kharmas, but they might be interesting in their own right. I have a half-baked theory that since they don't play that loud, I may find them useful for those quiet, late-night sessions when you don't want to wake anyone up.
Already I realise that positioning is key, so I'd say I've an "entertaining" few weeks ahead moving them around a couple of millimetres at a time.

Re: DIY Quad Stands - moved from classifieds
Absolutely but... they do play enough. Perfect for choral works, string quartet, female vocals (think Verve/Blue Note jazz). Sit back, dim the lights, pour an earthy burgundy. That'll do. I found a forgotten treasure-trove of Celtic-Tiger era Burgundies under the stairs last night. I've a lot of drinking to do.
