I enjoyed this CD on first listen and I was particularly taken with the slow movement of Ravel’s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in G major.

It's a loveable disc I think Fergus. Competitively priced, fantastic repertoire and passionate performances. I please you enjoyed it - and, I agree, that 2nd movement is a peach :-D

Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1:





This is a sparkling, masterful performance, full of fire and passion and complete with a virtuoso climax. The one thing that I have always wondered about with this work is why Tchaikovsky did not use that strong, powerful opening theme again after the first three minutes of the work?

From the very first opening notes you just know that this performance is going to be something special! Magnificent playing with gorgeous textures and tones caught on a wonderful recording makes for a very powerful version of these works.

It´s arguably the best recording dear Fergus. Il Giardino´s lineup of violinists is jaw dropping with 3 master virtuosos leading the way: Enrico Onofri, concertino, Riccardo Minasi, second concertino and Fabrizio Cipriani (who was one of Il Seminario Musicale´s concertinos) as first second violin.
They make an awesome sound of course, and I know, since I had the pleasure of hearing them play a selection of the Op.6 at the Theatre des Champs-Elysées in Paris a few years ago.
