Tchaikovsky's Manfred Symphony is a great work Matt. I really like it. Did you enjoy that version?

The Fauré's is like an old friend to me. I especially like the original (and more light) version of that work. My first exposure to that work was from the Naxos disk mentioned above. Beautiful and touching music.

It is only the 3rd time that I listened to the Duruflé's requiem and I find it amazing. Lots of depth in that work.

Matt.
Interesting post there Matt... we've just had a CM newbie (dhyantyke) asking about recommended versions of the Faure Requiem... I'm sure you'd be able to help him out...

We had guests over for dinner this afternoon and as background music (i.e. to distract my attention from small talk LOL!!!) I played this wonderful music....

I like it too. 10 years ago this was my least favorite work of Tchaikovsky as it is not as easily enjoyable as most of his other work. But now I find it very enjoyable. It is the only version of this work that I have (I have 1 cd for most of the pieces that I have in my collection) so I would say that I do like it.

Matt.

That is very true Matt. It took me quite a while to appreciate it also. It is a slow burner I think, one that needs a bit of time but, like you, I eventually came around to really liking it eventually.

Duruflé's Requiem is absolutely brilliant, I think he was a fabulous composer. It's often coupled with the Fauré on disc too. You know how much I love that Robert Shaw, Atlanta Symphony CD on Telarc...

I'll 'third' that motion and add that I would put his Hamlet into the same category... great, but not exactly as catchy as a certain other Shakespeare inspired piece he wrote...

I get even more delighted by the day, that you chose Purcell..

is there a Durufle appreciation hormone you can get on-line from Papua New Guinea, by any chance?
