surprisingly enough it doesn't sound like 5.14. Must check my system lol.
At least you managed to get rid of the crackles with PAv51.

If only now you managed to get close to 5.14, I would certainly check out your system, because you managed to screw it up nicely on the WASAPI playback then.

I will leave it to others to comment on sound quality, but can say there are several aspects that can be improved upon before you are truely at the level of 5.14. But things are getting closer.

7.36 + v51 all things ok. needs timing (timing is <7.18). texture feels weird.

---
back to liking 7.18/7.16 + v38... simple sound, natural, organic, easy-going.
(7.16 also needs timing. good enough for casual listening.)

Unfortunately the 5.14 comparisons are a bit esoteric as not many can run it.

I don't believe anybody had a problem with 5.14 apart from those with old mobo/cpu noy supporting avx.

But it is not esoteric because sq is still superior to the rest of the 100+ versions that came after

when i say "needs timing", i don't mean fast notes. fast notes sounds just fine here.

it is the weight. when note hits the instrument, it softens out. weird sound.

Around that time I couldn't run any AVX but now I can for some reason. If 5.14 will run on my ivy bridge I'll give it a go except it's not in the archive, unless I've missed it.

i take 7.18 and imagine what 5.14 sounds like

i can imagine the sound of wasapi bass + timing injected into 7.18.

7.18(or 5.14) is great for casual listening. musical content is limited really.

It's the biggest breakthrough in MQn history, glad you like it, it's a different sound.

Shall redo the code to check there were no more mistaken deletions and to remove the remains of the buffering code, but essentially that's the sound going forward.

Just to recap there is now nothing between the source data in ram and the device driver, so there's little that MQn is doing to influence the sound. It's an interesting insight into what affects the sound and largely confirms my thoughts.

The rest is down to your system and the choices you've made.

Tested on Server 2012 R2 with AudioPhil's Optimizer
Mqncontrol 3.64, mqnplay 1644 7.35 sse2
Portaudio v45-50 with noise

Mqncontrol 3.64, portaudio 51, mqnplay 1644 7.36 normal
GUI: ok GUI full AO optimized: ok
Minimal server: ok Minimal server full AO optimized: ok
Core full AO optimized: not working

@Gordon: Got it right that all versions pre v7.36 not working anymore with pa v51? At least the ones I tried didn't.

Thanks

This suggests that every player that uses KS would sound the same because "there is now nothing between the source data in ram and the device driver, so there's little that MQn is doing to influence the sound.".

So I can go back to Foobar as along as I use KS?
