Even among the many rarities that I own, this one stands out. Johann Mattheson is best remembered as the guy who nearly killed Handel in a quarrel after the premier of Mattheson´s opera Cleopatra in Hamburg. There are not many recordings of his music, but this Good Friday oratorio is especially interesting. It´s most curious feature is the use of a Glockenspiel (Papageno´s instrument in The Magic Flute). This was quite uncommon in oratorios, though Handel also uses one in Saul.
The music is quite good and the recording is excellent. I wonder what happened to the period instrument orchestra, the Accademia Filarmonica Köln, they are very good but this is the only recording I think they ever made.

Mozart String Quartet K465 (Dissonance), so called due to its somewhat eerie short introduction. Normal Mozart fare is soon restored however and we are treated to his normal bright and cheery optimism for the rest of the movement. The slow movement is gorgeous with some particularly fine cello work. The Minuet was very fine and the Finale Movement is a busy, bright movement full of cheery optimism.

I'm so torn between wanting the boxset on the one hand and asking myself whether I need another Bruckner set on the other....

I would defy anyone on Tir Na to listen to this CD and not be moved by it...

Unfortunately Jared, Early Music is not that popular around here as you know....
