Hope Sandoval wrote a beautiful poem for the loss of her friend. Nothing is left unsaid in these fine words.

“What will we do now?
Now that you leave me here.
Even though the dark blue sky is still radiant
And filled with the comforting sadness
That holds us together.

What we will do now?
As you’ve been embraced away.

Did I stay behind and not notice?
Did you leave a quiet message somewhere?
And I forgot to hear it.

Good night my beautiful friend.
Please come back when the hour is sound.”

I only discovered 2 months ago that Dave Roback passed away. Very sad news. That trio of albums from Mazzy Star back then are really special.

Typical Hope(ful) sentiments. Unfortunately, as I well know, when they're gone, they're gone....I've already written them down so I myself can stay behind before the hour gets late. Fine words indeed.

Listening tonight to Loyalty, the third album by The Weather Station. One of the finest and most rewarding records of recent years, the quality of Tamara Lindeman’s writing resonates and persists in the mind with an emotional depth that strongly recalls Joni Mitchell at her peak.

Image

“The record was called Loyalty from the beginning—it was the first decision I made about it. It’s a word you usually see written in copperplate script, a virtue: LOYALTY. But the songs don’t treat it that way, just as a thing to unpack. It’s a force that you have to reckon with: loyalty to the dream, to the “work,” to the mythical idea of “you” that somebody thought they saw. It can be a weakness as much as a strength; it can keep you from the reality of your own life, your own self.” - Tamara Lindeman

Aimee Mann’s Whatever remains a personal favourite of mine. I bought it on release in 1993 and still play it incessantly. Songs like Mr. Harris, 4th of July and Jacob Marley’s Chain remain some of her most potent and perfectly formed songs. One of the great debut solo albums.
