I am in agreement with you on the Dorati Dave....I think that you got it spot on with the fatigue thing....that is exactly what I found. I think that Dorati's is a really good set and well worth having but Goodman has always been my first choice for Haydn.

Fergus, do you like that recording? The Goodman CDs are €10 each in Tower, I don't have any of of the works by Goodman and the Hanover Band.

I do Sean but I suspect that you might find our Mr. Goodman a little on the lean side my friend. If you want to sample I would suggest that you buy a disc or two with some of your favourites on them so that you can do direct comparisons and then see how you get on.

Better still I might pay the ILAC library a visit and borrow one there. I think that I did have one out before and leaness certainly rings a bell.

I know that they have a Goodman disc there that has the 'Surprise' symphony. It's well worth getting. Hogwood is another one they have there. It is similar to the Goodman recording in some ways but it does have subtle differences. I'd still give the nod to Goodman though. I do love the sound of the woodwinds he uses, in particular that 'buzz' sound from the the period bassoon.

That is a good idea Seán....Goodman and Dorati would be at opposite ends of the "fullness" spectrum and I really do suspect that Goodman may not be for you....however, we have lots of time to work on you!!

Once again I agree with you Dave....I love that lovely blend of orchestral textures that he gets.

Bruckner Symphony in Fm....



This is a work that I have always liked because of its variety. The first and last movements have big powerful themes while the second has thoughtful themes and the third has dance like themes and they are all well played in this version.
