Richard Strauss
Ein Heldenleben
Chicago Symphony Orchestra
Fritz Reiner - conducting.
Recorded in 1954, Reiner´s Heldenleben is the first high quality stereo recording ever. A tribute to RCA, it still sounds great after almost 60 years!!!!
Indeed it is Pepe; the recording quality and performance is so much better than John Barbirolli's later recording with the LSO too, or perhaps it's just me? I felt it dragged, is turgid and gloopy. Perhaps I should give it another chance?
The Reiner is much better recorded, and personally, I too prefer Reiner in Strauss, it was one of his specialties, and the vintage CSO, is a marvel. Did you know that after the War the Cleveland Orchestra and the Chicago Symphony were made of mostly Hungarian and Czech musicians that fled Europe?
Maybe that´s why they were so good!!!!

I hadn't realised but that does make sense given the fact that both Reiner and Georg Szell were Hungarians too.
Happy New Year Pepe.
