I have always been very fond of that Naxos set with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra. It is the first ever set that I got but I still that it is pretty good. Always like the way the harp in the 1st, 3rd and 6th symphony was recorded.

I can't explain why but Sibelius 2nd has always been among my least favorite. I used to say that about the 7th and now it is in my top 3.

Anyways, great choice Fergus.
Matt.
LOL!! I really like Sibelius 2!!

The one thing that I do agree with you on is the value of the Naxos cycle though; a very good place to start as an introduction to someone who has not had any exposure to Sibelius.

Did you like the music Darren? I find the Vieuxtemps Violin Concertos to be really wonderful pieces of music but I only have them on Naxos (which I must add are very well performed!).

Is that a figure of speech or are you genuinely having difficulty with it? I am very curious given my declaration that I find it difficult.

I'm not saying I don't like it... but it will certainly take more than a few listens to re-acquaint myself with this musical language... let's put it like this; I bought it because I felt I needed to expand my knowledge of mid 20th Century repertoire, rather than because I really wanted it...

... if I'd gone and bought something I really wanted, then it would have been some more Haydn, but that won't make my musical appreciation particularly rounded, will it?

I didn't find it particularly inspiring if I am honest Fergus. I will try again at a later date...
