Thanks for the recommendation Fergus. If I find the 9th lacking, I have a collection full of other performances!
You are most welcome Don; I am sure that you will enjoy the set. Do let us know how you get on with it.

Plus I picked up the Karajan/Schoenberg/Berg/Webern discs that I used to own on LP for 3 discs for 17.

I think that this is the one that you refer to....

I have that wonderful set on vinyl and actually sold a second copy of it to someone here last year. It is a great set but pricey on vinyl nowadays!

That's the one. One of Karajan's best recordings.

It has always received great reviews and still appears to be an evergreen favourite!

I remember when it was released! If I remember the story right, I think I read this somewhere awhile back, Karajan financed the recordings as DGG was reluctant to record them with HvK. They seemed to think he could only sell Beethoven and Brahms and such.

This, and the Robert Craft recordings on Columbia (mostly Schoenberg), gave many a listener their first taste of the Second Viennese School composers, me included.

Thank you for that information Don; I was not aware of that story. Herbert certainly was a man who believed in his own ability!

Karajan reportedly felt so strongly about his recordings of the Second Viennese School that he agreed to finance them himself when DG balked at picking up the tab. David Hurwitz "Classics Today" review of the CD set.

This is the only reference I could find and probably the one I read.

Thank you Don. One would have thought that von Karajan had proven himself to all concerned at DG!
