Sean, you have partly hit upon the reason why I love these recordings so, and why I recommended them to you of all people. I know you have struggled with the heavy orchestration and muddy sound resulting from the use of larger forces in Brahms especially. 50% of what makes these recordings so likeable is obviously down to the superb quality of the soloists, but the other 50% really is down to the fact that both orchestras have smaller forces, lead by top rate conductors who have a great deal of experience in interpreting Brahms. These disks are frequently given 5 stars, part of the reason very often cited being the tonal colours within the orchestra and the sympathetic syntheseis between soloist and orchestra, which I think stand out in both of these recordings. As I've said before, tone colour is more important for me with Brahms & Schumann than probably any other composers that I listen to, which make these disks my joint first choice.

Jared wrote: Fergus, seriously, have you ever tried his delightful Cello Sonata? I've never heard this recording, but the Du Pre twofer with Brahms & Franck is ridiculously cheap at present, and may give you a slightly different approach to his work:

just a thought...
Thank you for that Jared.

These are both terrific performances and I thought that No. 7 was infused with a little more hope than usual.
