Hi John

I have been using a normal switchy wall wart. My 1 amp linear supply arrived this morning from Item Audio. Haven't had a chance to install it yet. Looking at the RPi I did not spot much in the way of onboard power regulation. There is what looks like a linear LDO to derive the 3v3 rail needed.

Sorry Nige, no pics (if I get a spare five later I'll try but I'm not into photography and we only have a little point and shoot job so no idea what I can produce. Meanwhile just imagine two little circuits connected with four bits of blue wire.

If you want to try a Beaglebone your need the Black model. I ordered from Robo-Savvy who are one of the official suppliers. They reckon first week of March. The BBB probably wins over the RPi as the busses are separate on the BBB though this may benefit USB interfacing more than the I2S interface which is accessed via dedicated GPIO pins.

But the RPI is working very well - even the wifi was no grief which has not been my previous experience with Linux systems. I use a 500gb USB harddrive (I am a Linux numpty and I can't get the NAS share configured to access a remote library). Playing hi res 24/192 files I have noticed only one little momentary glitch. With 16/44 no issues at all.

RPi (or similar) is a good first evaluation step along this path & seems to be a worthwhile step.
An FPGA eval board might be another worthwhile step. The problem with them is that the boards usually come with a bunch of stuff that would be of no interest to us for audio. Some of the very old 10 years+ boards would be more than up to the job. Might be hard to get hold of the older versions of the Xilinx/Altera synthesis tools though.
Would love to be able to get the time to work on an FPGA version. I reckon I could code the whole lot in about a week or less.
