Oh scrap the previous message.Found hibernate and 20 second listen could be the cd player.Switched volume back to off and all ok. Ok this is more like it. Is it the same or better than the cdp? well I have plenty of time to check that out. Its at least the same and thats on a brief 5minute listen.

Brilliant, take it easy, adjust volume to 0dB, engine to Beach, buffer to DirectLink, try Full Hibernate, glass of wine, do 1 track at a time.

tony wrote:Ok back from our walk. switched to young kernel streaming and hey presto we have lift off. I adjusted sound as well not sure if it would have worked with that or not. It was set to native and took I think -12db option but not sure if that did anything. Need to spend a bit of time doing reading the manual and checking the posts. Two immediate points. volume on amp needs to be raised and the 2 second gap is a pain hapened a couple of times during one track.
OK, you don't need to set it to -12dB - that is reducing volume by -12dB hence the need for ramping up the vol on the amp! Set it to odB & turn down the amp vol. knob.

2 second gap is the demo version of Jplay introducing a gap - there is some sort of annoyance introduced into all demo software - this is the one used in Jplay :)

Hi Ken, Thats grand I think I had done that it is set to off which I assume is the same thing. The sound seems to be higher playing the same track on cd compared to dac? Sorry you guys probably have guessed I will keep asking questions just to get to end game asap. So sorry if it is annoying or obvious. If I am hearing what I think I am the clarity and presentation on the dac seems to be a step up from my cdp. Anyway I wont jump to any conclusions just enjoy the music. Thanks again John for the chance to trial this.

Hey that's fine Tony! If my spelling and/or punctuation goes off you will know I'm on my second bottle of Ivor's very fine wines. The Sauvignon Blanc was excellent (had it all to myself) & I'm resisting opening a Pinot Grigio.

So you might be better to listen to Ken :)

Yes I know what Ivors wine can do to you, sorry John my walk has clouded my speed post reading. Without hibernate it performed similar (not sure about sq) to an arcam ipod dock i.e needed to turn up the amp to get the same volume. With hibernate on its like a light bulb being turned on. I understand what Ken use to muse about now. Ok also sorted the volume issue. The cyrus amp allows you to set the volume offset on each input. The dac was +9 while cdp was +4 have adjusted both the same. Should have done all this messing around before posting!

No. let me correct your misunderstanding - this reduction in SQ was caused by the digital vol setting in Jplay turned down to -12dB - this reduces the number of bits from 16 to 14bits (each bit is equivalent to -6dB & I'm presuming you are playing 16/44 material?) if my maths is still holding up after a bottle of wine?

As Ken advised, go slower! Turning the vol back to 0dB doesn't lose any bits & the sound will be much more full-bodied & coherent. Hibernate may also add another improvement but don't mix up the two!

Just to be sure that you are getting the best sound - as per the user guide, you need to ensure that your laptop (which is recommended) is not grounded i.e if it sounds different when run off batteries compared to when the charger is plugged in then you have a grounded charger which can be easily sorted

Thanks John I fully understand it I was messing around and because I hadnt switched to kernel streaming earlier I jumped in on the volume control as a solution. I have turned it off and have tried turboscale(I think) and full scale hibernate. Look I will leave it for now and do a bit of reading and experimenting and primarily listening over the next couple of days. I think I am hooked already, what a toy. Enjoy your wine.
