My pleasure, for Schumann I rather like Chailly's 2 CD Mahler Edition set, Gustav did improve them and for Rachmaninov I rarely look beyond Svetlanov.Ciaran wrote:English Music.

Edit Schumann's symphonies
Edit Rakhmaninov's symphonies
(Thanks, Seán! (Actually, I try at both of these, occasionally with some success.))
I'm not sure about that... although the richer, larger orchestration didn't destroy them either. Brahms & Schumann orchestral works have to be played in the right hands...Seán wrote:My pleasure, for Schumann I rather like Chailly's 2 CD Mahler Edition set, Gustav did improve them.
ie, Chailly.Jared wrote:I'm not sure about that... although the richer, larger orchestration didn't destroy them either. maybe, but I've not heard his earlier set with the Concertgebouw, performing the Symphonies the way Schumann intended, so I can't comment.Seán wrote: ie, Chailly.
The Sawallisch approach to Brahms is horrible, it put me off Brahms symphonic music for years. I do have his Schumann cycle and it is immeasureably better I agree.Jared wrote:maybe, but I've not heard his earlier set with the Concertgebouw, performing the Symphonies the way Schumann intended, so I can't comment.Seán wrote: ie, Chailly.
agreed on both counts...Seán wrote: The Sawallisch approach to Brahms is horrible, it put me off Brahms symphonic music for years. I do have his Schumann cycle and it is immeasureably better I agree.
The LPO cycle is reasonably horrid, I am trying out the Wiener Symphoniker cycle at the moment and it's much better. I have to say that the LPO are one orchestra that I sometimes find easier to criticise for bland readings than other major orchestras...Jared wrote:agreed on both counts...Seán wrote: The Sawallisch approach to Brahms is horrible, it put me off Brahms symphonic music for years.
