Rock - what are you listening to?
Re: Rock - what are you listening to?
Finishing off the night tonight with some of my favourite Frank Zappa albums - One Size Fits All, The Grand Wazoo, Hot Rats and the immortal We're Only In It For The Money (perhaps the greatest satirical work of art in music). Sheer musical invention and proof positive that humour belongs in music. One of my single biggest musical influences when I was growing up and the man who taught me to open up to all types of music - from Stravinsky and Varese to Mingus, Dolphy and Wes Montgomery and all points in between. He was also, in my opinion, one of the very greatest electric guitarists (right up there with Hendrix and Fripp) who ever lived.

Re: Rock - what are you listening to?
Gonna have a ball watching all the YouTube stuff on Zappa et al all this week. Thanks! As regards his prowess as a guitar player I would have to agree with you (not just for the sake of it,mind!); he made it all look so ridiculously easy and ever so slightly off-hand; However, much as I admire his skills I've always found his playing 'cold' and 'technical'.Still he really made a massive dent on Rock music and beyond and his influence is incalculable......mcq wrote:Finishing off the night tonight with some of my favourite Frank Zappa albums - One Size Fits All, The Grand Wazoo, Hot Rats and the immortal We're Only In It For The Money (perhaps the greatest satirical work of art in music). I have just counted 17 Donovan albums on my shelf Dermot so I suppose I could be termed a bit of a fan alright!cybot wrote:You must be quite the Donovan fan fergus as that's yet another sleeve I've never seen before. What album(s) would you recommend?
My favourites are:
A gift from a flower to a garden - double album and overall favourite
Barabajagal
Open Road
7 Tease
The above are probably all meaningless to the wider public....he was a child of his time (but very talented)!
