I don't have any of Brahms's Motets, and they don't appear to be recorded all that regularly... I'm sure Herreweghe does a great job with them, but what you say of their overall quality as works, Fergus? Would they be on a par with Bruckner's?

No Jared, they would not be quite up there with Bruckner's Motets but are still lovely all the same. I have two different CDs of this music and, naturally, this one is by far the better!

^^ thanks Fergus, I suspected as much... after all I composer can't excel at every genre he turns his hand to can he? Just listen to 'Fidelio'...

... neverthless being the Brahmsophile that I am, I'm sure they'll be added to my collection at some point in the medium term.. ;-)

Ludwig van Beethoven
String Quartet No. 7 Op. 59 'Rasumovsky'

Alban Berg Quartet

The Alban Berg take this quartet at a brisk tempo but theirs is a rich musical apporach unlike the Takács who tear this music to pieces, this is a very enjoyable reading.

Maurice Ravel
String Quartet in F

Quartetto Italiano

I was looking forward to an impressive performance of this lovely quartet but I wasn't really prepared for the glorious sound that assaulted my senses when I listened to it earlier tonight. The Italians really are in a league of their own.
