I get same distortion with the 3.39 avx 2.

Have to put my testing on hold for a while as I ran into a problem...well maybe not a problem but a bit mad all the same!!
Started comparing different versions of MQN recent versions with various controls and was finding it very hard to find an inferior version to the recent 3x versions. Went back through earlier versions going back as far as 2013 and could not get any MQN to sound any more lacking than the recent versions.
Tried old 32 bit versions and versions that played back HiRez on my DAC and they would not work anymore on hirez just loads of white noise despite changing versions folders and reboots so all a bit strange, they did play 16 44 material OK though and again everything sounded excellent almost as if my audio PC got locked in to a setting that it did not want to let go of.....

Since I recently upgraded my DAC with a new Digital input board with more clocks and stuff on it with new firmware and drivers I thought there may have been a problem with the DAC.
To check I reinstalled JPlay and it worked fine and again sounded excellent in hibernate mode on all bit rates so the DAC was not the issue.

Really baffled as to what is going on so before I got resetting everything I have gone and ordered another Toshiba ssd for OS so I can create an image of my OS as it is today and then use one of these drives for tweaking to see if I can get back to being able to tell differences.
Maybe it is an age thing but 2 days in a row and everything is still sounding excellent so I am afraid to go messing and loose whatever setting is in place that is keeping everything in good stead.
A nice complaint but baffling all the same!

Could your clocks and buffers render your dac mostly immune to transport quality?

well if the dac board is different, its different and may not be 24 in 32 like your old one
you sorta have a new dac

ive yet to hear anything remotely immune to input quality, but the meitner does better than most

Got the ssd delivered tonight to Parcel Motel and have it imaged and booting up exactly the same as the original so happy to start digging in over the next few days to see if I can get my hearing fixed!!
There are added chips on the new input board but most noticeably 2 clocks (the guys at Meitner call them crystals) next to the XMos chip that were not on the previous board.
I asked them what these were added for and the answer was for extra stability for the XMos chip, will post pics tomorrow.

MQn is really an outstanding player, thank you sbgk.

2 reasons you heard more air with high vs normal
1. sound becomes mixture/fatter -> false air.
2. sounds get more fine-grained -> true air.

overtime i learnt that air is not accurate assessment for digital tweaks. accuracy < 50%.
