Ludwig van Beethoven
Symphony No. 8

Beethoven's Eighth is given the full big band treatment here by Gielen and the Frieburgers.

Interesting; the work was not written for the big band treatment so I wonder how that went.

First listen to two wonderful works. Both composers were unknown to me until now.

I am not keen on the big band approach to Beethoven's Eighth and so far my favourites are Vänskä's and Brüggen's:
Ludwig van Beethoven
Symphony No. 8
Berlin Symphony Orchestra
Claudio Abbado conducting.
Ludwig van Beethoven
Symphony No. 8
Orchestra of the 18th Century
Franz Brüggen conducting.
Sensationally good, it is a wonderful listening experience.

Did the Vanbrugh String Quartet perform May's SQ in the Museum a wee while ago?

Very pleasant but the Vänskä MO performance is far more to my liking.

The Symphony # 5 is a bold, colorful, rhapsodic statement much in the style of Khachaturian with some Prokofiev and Myaskovksy thrown in. Vladimir Jurowski (1915-1971) is the father of conductor Michail Jurowski and grandfather of conductor Vladimir Jurowski. Russian Painters is a multi movement tone poem, akin to "Pictures at an Exhibition".
Here is hoping for a continuation of this cycle.

I honestly do not know Seán.
