tony wrote:You are right Aleg can't disagree. Probably wishful thinking on my part with regard to these recordings but I do think MQn sse2 renders these recordings acceptable to me while not sounding like a muddy mess. Still great detail but a decent body to the tracks and I like that. A lot of the well recorded stuff puts me to sleep so while useful if suffering from insomnia I need the stuff I like to work on my gear if possible.

Separate note I can't understand how sound engineers and the artists cannot identify over the top sibilance etc in recordings and just do more takes or deal with it before releasing. The Sound levels on a lot of modern recordings also are ridiculous.

Might get testing later
I find a lot of modern recordings edgy, it's more the pop ones, eg Adele just as one example. Simply recorded and less processed modern recordings I find are much smoother, these are usually not mainstream artists.

The avx vs sse2 discussion is interesting. To be fair as I've not been able to listen to avx until yesterday I've only compared 3.14 avx to 3.25 sse2 so my comparison is not very scienntific. I know I'm behind but I only have so much will to make comparisons. Maybe it's because I listened to 3.14 vs 3.25 so the main differences could be due to the version changes. I found the avx version to be more clinical and most importantly it had less depth. The sse2 version had greater depth and was more realistic sounding. I felt avx was pushing to hard at the details whereas sse2 flowed better. My OB speakers tend to tell me a lot about stage depth, the difference was significant. Without Tasker I could hear far less difference between avx and sse2. Of course the level of PC tuning will have an impact too. Once there's a final final version of MQn hopefully we'll have sse2 and avx versions to choose from.

Phew! Got it working again. Thanks Aleg! I didn't work at first, admin and w8 comp.mode boxes have to be unchecked for me for it to work. Put everything in new folders - restart - close mqndeamon.exe - run a sse version first - then run avx 2 two times.

It can be like that! Did you also cross the threshold 3 times but only in one direction and with one hand behind your back?

I never encountered an "Access Violation" error on mqncontrol.exe before!
It has up till now always been on mqnplay.exe

Are you running Server 2012 or Windows 8.1?
Server 2012 doesn't need the "Run as Admin" checkbox, but did not yet find fault with it/

In my experience using Windows 8.1 it is needed.
So I'm curious.

Unfortunately it can be like that.
I would love to understand why an avx instruction set behaves differently from an sse instruction set in this way.

Cheers

I wonder if it's to do with usb audio drivers which which may not have been written with avx in mind? It's as though they use the same area of memory that avx uses....this is purely my ignorant pondering....

One thing I didn't say yesterday was that are repeated attempts to get music playing, the system decided there was a driver problem and automatically restarted 3 times. It was a struggle to get the files removed so I could make a fresh install of the Young driver but it worked in the end. It seems like it's a driver issue.

Hmmm......update. I had more trouble today. Sometimes my basic edition of W8.1 wanted the registry setting EnableLUA set to 0 and at other times set to 1. There seems to be no logic to it.

2.26 sub,no sub, 8x3 16 have flow as good as AVX.

may prefer no sub. has best focus. quiet background. soft. musicality is great.

Sse 3.26 sub better than 3.26 nosub better than 3.26 3x8

Nosub and 3x8 no candidate as both have textureless bass.

3.14 avx better than sse 3.26 sub

Yes! But only under excessive swearing, would not work without it. I call this "The terrible avx ritual of pain in the arse"
