Concertos 1, 2 & 3.



Up until now, the OAE version of these works has been my favorite but I think this one just edges it. Whereas the OAE version is a bit tighter and more focused, the playing here is bolder and has the more interesting textures and intonation in sound. Despite the slightly more lively tempi compared to the OAE version, it never feels out of control. This was a critiscism I had of the Hogwood version which I regard as being a little too much on the 'wild' side. :-)

A great coincidence Dave; I had not listened to the Brandenburgs for a while so I took this one out....

This is a fabulous 5 CD set of Baroque music. This weekend I have listened to the first and fourth CDs several times. The music is beautifully played, it sparkles throughout. The recordings were made by DG in the seventies.

Beethoven – Symphony No. 9 (Wand)...



No. 9 was wonderfully performed....powerful and bold with a contrasting, beautifully melodic slow movement. This is an important movement for me in Beethoven’s symphonic cycle and it was exquisitely played. The final movement was a grand, sweeping affair, full of exuberance. This was a very impressive performance overall, which made a bold statement.

Schubert – Symphonies 1-4 (Bruggen)....



These are terrifically bold and assertive performances which made me sit up and take notice of the music in a way that I had not done before. The music making is full of energy, drive and is played with gusto and the melodies sing out. A major re-assessment is now called for on my behalf in relation to this music (as I have tended not to show any interest in Schubert’s symphonies) because Bruggen’s presentation of the music is much more exciting than I have heard before.
Lovers of Haydn’s music will, I feel, also really like these recordings.

That's good enough for me, I'll get it, thanks Fergus. Speaking of Haydn have a look at my new thread and again speaking of Haydn I'd love to get the Bruggen Sturm und Drang set, it includes the Paris and London symphonies too. Oh Dear!
