These are terrifically bold and assertive performances which made me sit up and take notice of the music in a way that I had not done before. The music making is full of energy, drive and is played with gusto and the melodies sing out. A major re-assessment is now called for on my behalf in relation to this music (as I have tended not to show any interest in Schubert’s symphonies) because Bruggen’s presentation of the music is much more exciting than I have heard before.
Lovers of Haydn’s music will, I feel, also really like these recordings.
