Jack Wong's ISO and JLP/XP minimal install

Did not start anywhere close to 16mB.

One still had to whittle away at it.

A big chunk was removed, I believe, with nLite. Jack may have removed some other things manually I cannot remember.

We had already got it down to the minimum when JW thought there was something better about starting with XP Home instead of XP Pro.

I worked with the ISO but continue to feel by the time you get it down to minimal level there was no difference. Jack was more scientific than I and has great ears and swears there is a difference.

Jack's ISO automatically incorporated the JULI@ drivers and using AWE which HOME did not allow.

I do not think one could get HOME any smaller than PRO - I certainly could not. There was nothing left one could remove without getting the BLACK screen of death. No more blue screens with this install!

Now that Gordon is playing with squeezelite makes me wonder if the old minimized XP could be worth exploring again.

I know nothing about squeezelite/box - is there any reason to think it would prefer later versions of WINDOWS? Of course, one would have to start from the beginning since the registry will be
different - not drastically so.

If someone will tell me there could be something to it I would be glad to come up with an install.

One thing I have found that minimal installs are not concerned with what motherboard you are using so if someone wants to try it they could copy it and give it a try. I am using the GIGABYTE H81.amp-up since I hope that the audio USB port is better than usual quality and you can actually turn off the power to it (verified). Using the low wattage Haswell CPU with two cores. Before we would limit the CPU to one core only but with JLP I get the feeling I should keep both working for Gordon's affinity command.

I would think anyone using an H81 chipset would have no problem with the install. Plus, it is easy enough to email it when it is done.

yes, performance is no difference. but still need a ISO. deleting things in a running windows has bad consequences in SQ. (i am guessing coz registry is built based on ISO. less ISO=less registry)

maybe try mqn first. easier to setup than squeezelite. does it work on xp?

is haswell fully functional in xp?

my z77 board's chipset isn't fully functional in vista or earlier. (but does it matter)

I think MQN needs WASAPI

and from what I have seen there is no way to insert WASAPI into XP.

I need to learn more about this squeeze stuff.

in win2012, between core mode and non-gui mode,
under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes

there are 20000 lines difference in registry! (compared based on ultracompare)

quickly experimented. took out first 200 lines of difference. definite change in SQ.

heard no horrible jitters like strain, intense, compression.

heard increased in resolution in weak signal. but... added layer of fog.

the differences are quite complex... will need some time figure out how to legally strip registry.

if you have win7 pro/ultimate, you can strip it based on windows basic edition for example.

comparing difference between core and gui in registry... one of the biggest piece of pie is the word "upnp".

according to core mode, 99.9% of keys that involves the word "upnp" can be "officially" deleted.

experiment using vmware, hyper-v

total of deleted lines: about 0-5000 (i guess...)

at the first 1000 lines of deletion, SQ seems better.
as i get towards the end (about 30mins later of hard work), SQ increases exponentially.

this should also work in win7.

exhausted....

just so you have an idea, core-mode has 877529 lines in total in notepad.

a b compare between before and after, definite increase in SQ. obvious reduction in jitters

i have no energy to do this again in my main OS....

if anyone is interested in trying, i can post more details. otherwise, i will just put this tweak in the iso i am creating.

alright, so far today, stripping based on core mode under
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT -> always increases SQ
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> many traps. careful

for those interested in stripping

below are exact differences under AppID going from non-gui -> core in win2012
if MS thinks they are useless, they are really useless. they look mostly useless to me.

all these crap shall estimate to about 70000 lines of the registry if properly done.

in earlier posts, people deleted files from c:\windows, but they forgot to delete corresponding junks from registry. that's SQ becomes unstable.

today i took out about 2000-6000 lines of "wercplsupport" and "upnp", my SQ has boosted by 2-3%. just got be careful not overdoing it.

Very cool, JC. Can you be more specific, however? E.g:

- I don't understand what you mean by '70000 lines' in the previous post. What you list is clearly not 70000 keys... do you mean deletion of these keys will result in 70000 lines of registry reduction?

Thanks.

'70000 lines' in notepad.

quite complex to explain. in registry, search the word 'upnp', delete key. search again, until all keys with 'upnp' are deleted.
this isn't finished.
take note of GUID of each key deleted. (some keys don't have GUID, so you do nothing there)
search each GUID, delete its key.
take note of each GUID of each GUID deleted.
.....recursively delete everything until you done.
that's how microsoft cleans registry

remember to also take notes of actual files related to 'upnp'. delete them from c:\windows\system32.

be ready to spend a lot of time... delete too much also makes SQ strained. but in terms of stripping, SQ doesn't matter.
system should be stable.

---TWEAK 46----
in bios, you can choose
CPU Power Duty Control: T.probe or extreme

i discover this setting is weather dependent.
if weather is cold and dry like Great Britain, try T.probe.

if weather is high humidity, try extreme.

very very interesting...

best SQ comes from T.probe.
worst SQ also comes from T.probe if weather is 'bad'. lol ....
